Ready for hurricane season
Jacksonville (US) to receive mobile device app that provides instant updates on threats, evac info and weather patterns.
Mayor Alvin Brown has announced a new mobile device app from the City of Jacksonville that can now be downloaded for free. The app is called JaxReady and it gives instant updates on potential storm threats, weather patterns, evacuation information, bridge and road closures, and much more.
“Our goal is to provide up-to-date information regarding all things storm-related – right to users’ finger tips,” said Mayor Brown. “This will help residents who may be affected when power is out and they have no other line of communication but a mobile device like a smartphone or an iPad.”
JaxReady was created by the city’s Information Technologies Division and Emergency Preparedness Division at no additional cost to the taxpayer. During production of this app, the city’s ITD staff researched other communities in the state and across the country that had similar app’s. It found that only a small number of cities across the country have such an app, meaning Jacksonville is on the cutting edge of this kind of technology for residents.
“The application serves as a great example of how our city government is working hard in tough times to increase service without increasing costs,” said Mayor Brown.
The launch of the mobile app comes complete with a 30-second public service announcement, which is airing on local television and radio stations. The PSA and an instructional video about JaxReady are available at here.
Mayor Brown also reminded residents that the official start of Hurricane Season is Friday, June 1. On the heels of Tropical Storm Beryl, he is urging all residents to make emergency kits now with items like canned food, can openers, water and blankets.
