What does your year ahead look like?
A New Year, a new Journal and yes, the CAG Column returns! 2006 was interesting for many reasons, and looking back on the columns I wrote in the early months of the year I can see that a number of the issues discussed linger on affecting public safety communications. Control room consolidations - the recently regionalised ambulance trusts will progress the consolidation of control facilities, necessitating new working practices and presenting issues of integration of disparate systems.
Mergers - financial, operational and other reasons will lead to the merging of some fire brigades.
Regional Controls - FiReControl will announce its preferred supplier for the critical infrastructure required to deliver the regional control centre project.
The police service will implement national standards for call handling and begin work in earnest on the replacement for Airwave.
O2 Airwave will be bought (OK, so that was first reported in the Times on 7th Dec).
Cell broadcast, wireless mobility, Intelligent Transport Systems and biometrics will feature significantly in the news.
The country will be gripped by a national flu pandemic in late February.
BAPCO will remain the single voice of the public safety ICT community in the UK, and perhaps beyond
BAPCO 2007 (Business Design Centre, Islington Apr 24-26) will be hailed a huge success thanks to the subtle changes made to the format of the show and the outcomes achieved.
Assuming that you are a regular reader, you will have noticed that the Journal you are holding feels and looks different. Its always good to freshen up - it makes you feel re-invigorated, but let's not forget that what is really important here is CONTENT, CONTENT, CONTENT. Your Journal needs your input to ensure it remains a worthwhile read so I urge you to contact the Editor and invite her into your organisation for a chat about what you're up to.
