North East Lincolnshire residents urged to register for Emergency SMS
The new 999 service makes it easier for residents suffering hearing loss or difficulty with speech to make an emergency calls.
EmergencySMS is part of the standard 999 service and has been designed specifically for people with hearing loss or difficulty with speech.
Since September 2009, the emergencySMS service has been successfully trialled nationally and has handled hundreds of real emergency calls.
Humberside Police is urging people to register for the new service. Andrew Globe, command centre operations manager for Humberside Police, said: "Humberside is one of the top three forces in the country for call handling and we are always proactive in looking for new initiatives such as this to further enhance the service we deliver to the public.
"It is important to us we provide a high standard of service to all and this service is an excellent communications tool."
To register for the service – which is available on all mobile networks in the UK – residents should text 'register' to 999 and then follow the instructions sent in reply.
