11 June 2011: the CARE IT Adventure Challenge.
Hiking, biking and canoeing in Exmoor for IT professionals, supporting leading aid and development charity CARE International.
All funds raised will support CARE’s poverty-fighting work in 70 countries, which uses IT in extraordinary ways, including using Google Earth to plan the construction of refugee camps following natural disasters or conflict; use of blogging from war zones; and providing PCs and IT training for mothers to help them run schools for their daughters in areas where girls are marginalized.
Leading overseas development agency CARE International is delighted to announce the launch of the first CARE IT Adventure Challenge exclusively for the IT industry.
The challenge, taking place in Exmoor National Park on 11th June 2011, will see IT teams covering the distance of a marathon in a day by foot, bike and canoe. There will be 'mystery' challenges along the way, plus a one-hour bonus stage for the super fit and ultra competitive.
The challenge offers participants an unusual, fun way of testing themselves, as well as providing colleagues with an exciting and imaginative brand of networking and team building.
CARE Challenge Manager Neil Munro said, "This is the first Adventure Challenge of its kind for the IT industry. The event will include mountain biking in scenic Exmoor, canoeing on Wimbleball Lake and a spectacular trail challenge. Every bead of sweat is worthwhile as funds raised will support CARE’s fantastic work."
The cause
CARE works in over 70 countries helping 57 million of the world's poorest people find a route out of poverty.
Many of CARE's overseas projects make use of IT in the most extraordinary ways, including using Google Earth to plan the construction of refugee camps following natural disasters or conflict; use of blogging from war zones; and providing PCs and IT training for mothers to help them run schools for their daughters in areas where girls are marginalized.
CARE has recently launched www.lendwithcare.org, a website allowing users to make small loans to entrepreneurs in the developing world, helping them start or expand small businesses; feed their families and send their children to school.
Past CARE events have attracted teams who work in IT from a wide range of companies, including Barclays, Accenture, Harvey Nash PLC, ACAS, QA, Rugby Football Union, Ixion Holdings and many more.
Neil says, "The CARE IT Adventure Challenge is one of the most fun and unusual challenges in CARE’s calendar. We're hoping to raise £60,000 to support CARE’s work so we urge teams to get signed up to challenge themselves and challenge poverty!"
