Kent Fire and Rescue Service designs an Internet annual service performance plan

Published:
13 August, 2010

Kent Fire is the first FRS to design its annual service performance plan specifically for the internet. The plan, which has been published on its website, aims is to reach a wider audience with information on performance and plans for the future, as well helping reduce costs and the environmental impact of printing. The plan is also being promoted via social media such as Twitter.

“In these difficult economic times it is more important than ever that we give the public information about how we are spending their money, the services we deliver, and the value they are getting,” said Richard Stanford-Beale (Policy Manager for planning and performance).

“The service performance plan provides details on how the Authority has performed over the last year as well as its plans for the future. This year the plan has been designed for the internet, allowing members of the public, stakeholders and staff to navigate to the information they need more easily than is possible with a printed document. The web format also means that the performance information contained in the plan can be updated throughout the year.”

The plan sets out KFRS ambitions for the next ten years and, following consultation through the last integrated risk management plan, it details plans for the future. There are sections for each of the new KFRS corporate objectives, as well as supporting information such as - why we are here, about the area, summary of incidents and performance Information.

Advantages of web publishing include reaching more people with more easily accessible information on performance and plans than could be achieved through a paper-based approach. In addition, performance data can be updated on a quarterly basis, whereas with a print publication the figures are static for an entire year. Also, online publishing means KFRS can make savings on print and distribution costs and have less of an environmental impact.
