The BAPCO Journal talks with Co-CEO of Cellebrite about its new Physical Pro UFED about the products capabiltiies and how it will help law enforcement agencies across the world tackle crime and terrorism

In January we spoke with Cellebrite about its Universal Forensic Extraction Device (UFED) that is currently being used by law enforcement agencies across the globe to help extract data from mobile phones. In late September the company announced the launch of a new product called the Physical Pro, which allows users to extract ‘physical’ data from mobile devices i.e. information which has been deleted but still resides on the internal systems of the phone, to offer an increased level of data retrieval for those in top-end law enforcement areas like anti-terrorism and special forces units.

Yossi Carmil the Co-CEO of CelleBrite spoke with the BAPCO Journal to explain more about the new product: “We started work on the Physical Pro last summer after calls from the industry for a device which could get hold of data within phones that had been deleted from the phone itself, but was still on the internal systems. As such we developed the Physical Pro and launched it this September. The device is already in use with some UK Police agencies and we are on the verge of launching it to the US, Europe and South American markets too.”

The new device is designed to complement the existed UFED so that users can have the best possible chance of getting key data from devices. The UFED can access the logical data – that stored on the phone – of 2,100 devices while the new Physical Pro can access the physical data of 1,000 devices. By using the two devices there is the best chance that forensic personnel can find potentially important information on discarded / captured phone devices. As Carmil notes, “the Physical Pro, like the UFED, requires no third party applications or specialist software to make it run. It’s simple a case of plugging the phone in to the device and extracting the data as required – either to a PC terminal or to another device, or USB stick. This makes it a very efficient, effective solution as well.”

The UFED Physical Pro is embedded with powerful analytical capabilities, performing intelligent binary parsing of the memory data which interprets hidden information, including deleted data such as text messages, images, video files, call history, and phonebook entries. All of the extracted and reconstructed information is then organised into clear, concise reports that can be used for gathering investigative research and legal evidence in a court of law.

Carmil also notes, “With the addition of the Physical Pro UFED Cellebrite can no support over 2,000 mobile handsets models for logical extraction, more than 500 models for file dump and over 500 models for physical extraction, helping law enforcement teams uncover information that was previously inaccessible with conventional extraction methods. We will have the device will be on display for the first time publicly at the Milipol show in Paris next week where we believe it will prove very popular.”
