New incident handling software for Scottish Ambulance
Scottish Ambulance Service selects Datix Patient Safety and Risk Management software to ensure timely recording and management of patient safety, risks and incidents
The Scottish Ambulance Service serves at the frontline of the NHS in Scotland and covers the largest geographic area of any ambulance service in the UK. The Datix software was chosen, after an evaluation process, for its ability to be easily customised. The software will be used to record incidents and manage the risks associated with providing an ambulance service such as assaults, manual handling when moving patients and trips, falls and slips.
Paul Gowens, Head of Risk at the Scottish Ambulance Service said, “The type of risks we manage are similar to those for any NHS Board. When we decided we needed a new system to collate and report on incidents, we looked at three commercially available systems. After a thorough evaluation process, we chose Datix. One of the main reasons was Datix’s flexibility, which has meant we can customise it to meet our requirements. Datix is also widely used in the NHS, other ambulance services and throughout Scotland. This gave us the additional benefit of being able to benchmark our reports against other NHS Boards.”
The Risk Management Team also uses Datix to record clinical incidents and report on them separately for the Clinical Governance Committee. The Complaints module in Datix enables the Scottish Ambulance Service to generate responses to patients by appropriate deadlines and monitor performance.
In addition the service is implementing Datix Web Safety Alerts and Claims modules. The Datix Claims module will enable the service to manage all aspects of legal claims, including finance, correspondence and timescales.
