BAPCO Journal undertook a trial of their own with the Blackberry Curve 8310 to see how they worked and what they might be like to use on the street as an officer would.

Certainly the design is compact and lightweight, but with a nice robust feel to it so it didn’t feel flimsy and you felt it could cope with being knocked about if you were running with it in your pocket. The keypad, while awkward at first, took no more than a day or two to get used to and certainly if you were using it day in, day out you would become competent on it in no time. The speed of the internet connection was good and the scroll function was both straightforward and easy to understand when accessing emails or navigating websites.

Without hyperbole it’s not hard to see why Blackberry’s and PDAs are revolutionising policing on the street with their ease of use, good design and ability to help police carry out functions on the beat, rather than back at the station.
