BAPCO (Scotland) held a successful seminar and exhibition at Strathclyde Fire and Rescue Headquarters in Hamilton on Wednesday 14th February 2007.

A number of delegates attended the 'Communicating for Success' event at Strathclyde Fire & Rescue Service earlier this month. Attendees were treated to a number of presentations, providing thought provoking information on:

Stein Connelly (Traffic Scotland)

An interesting talk was given on the traffic management system in Scotland. Tracing the early development through NADICS to the present web-based and roadside display modes, Stein gave a fascinating insight into the way the information on Scotland’s roads is gathered and displayed on the http://www.trafficscotland.org/ web site.

Ron Cowan (Glasgow City Council)

Ron is the Emergency Planning Officer in Glasgow and started his presentation by talking about the planning of the response to the blast on May 11, 2004, in the Grovepark Mills, Maryhill, which destroyed the factory.

He gave a unique insider report of how all the various organisations and charities communicated with excellent illustrations.

Ron then gave a brief report of how a future Resilient Communications Network in Scotland would replace previous landline based networks.

He concluded by explaining how the radio amateur RAYNET organisation have provided valuable support at many incidents over the years.

Lieutenant Commander Chris Talbot (Royal Navy)

Communications in the Royal Navy encompasses radio from VLF to Sat Com, and with the various levels of communication depending on the location and tactical need. Chris gave some history to RN communications and had a number of anecdotes and pictures.

The talk concentrated on communications and various examples were given.

Siobhan Scott (O2 Airwave)

This was a well delivered presentation on the World’s largest secure public safety radio communications network. With 160,000 users and 3,300 base stations she explained how resilience had been upgraded and how the network had been deployed at most of the major public safety incidents of the last two years.

Kenny Fraser (Excelerate)

Kenny gave a talk on examples of wireless connectivity using satellite and many other communications mediums providing a mesh structure for resilience. Using specially equipped vehicles communications are enabled at incident scenes. Nodes connect to every other node using wireless technology and greatly enhances the communications infrastructure.

Paul Sharp the BAPCO Chairman (Scotland) chaired proceedings including the Annual General Meeting which was held immediately prior to the lunch break.
