2009 NLPG and NSG Exemplar Awards Celebrate ten years of the NLPG
The 2009 NLPG and NSG Exemplar Awards will take place in London on November 26 2009 to recognise the outstanding service delivery, effort, commitment and innovation provided by local authorities, fire and police in the creation, maintenance and utilisation of the National Land & Property Gazetteer (NLPG) and National Street Gazetteer (NSG).
Intelligent Addressing and the Improvement and Development Agency for local government, will jointly present the awards at a one-day conference and exhibition ‘Underpinning Transformational Government’, to be held at the Park Plaza, Victoria, London. This year the Awards are also supported by the Ministry of Justice and the Department for Communities and Local Government following the adoption of the NLPG to improve electoral registers and the use of the NLPG to mobilise the FiReControl project respectively.
The NLPG and NSG, created at source by local government, presents the first, definitive, national lists of addresses and streets. The data provides unique identification of streets and properties across England and Wales and is maintained virtually in real-time by local authorities. The gazetteers are used by local government and their partners in the fire and police and national parks services, to link their information and systems to transform and improve services whilst generating real operational savings.
With the introduction of the Mapping Services Agreement (MSA) in 2005, local government set in place a contractual framework to maintain and share the gazetteers with councils; police forces; fire; national parks; conservation boards; passenger transport services; town, parish and community councils and local government run Local Education Authority (LEA) schools.
The programme is 10 years old this year. It represents the most successful example of a local government shared service delivered nationally. It not only provides vital location data from planning authorities to other councils, but also to the emergency services to support their mobilisation, incident recording and joint working with other public bodies.
Increasingly, police and fire authorities are working closely with local authorities and collaborating in crime and disorder reduction partnerships, property inspections and enhancing property information. These Awards also recognise the importance of this partnership working. Sharing consistent data enables all parties to better organise their service delivery as the same address structure is used for all the transactions, which result in fewer errors, inconsistencies and duplication of effort.
John Hayes, Director at IDeA, said, "The 2009 Exemplar awards and the ‘Underpinning Transformational Government’ Conference mark the 10th birthday of the NLPG, a triumph of private public partnership and an inspiration for the concept of ‘bottom-up’ data creation and sharing. The Awards not only acknowledge the hard work and vision of those creating and working with the NLPG and the NSG but also act as a platform to encourage others to learn by their example, to improve efficiency, deliver better services and bring about closer collaboration across the country".
