The 2009 IEEE International Conference on Communications (IEEE ICC 2009), the annual flagship event sponsored by the IEEE Communications Society (IEEE ComSoc), will be held from June 14 to 18 in the historic city of Dresden, Germany located just above the scenic banks of the Elbe River.

Attended each year by thousands of scientists, researchers, academia and industry professionals, IEEE ICC 2009 is dedicated to furthering the discussion of the latest technical and business issues in communications and networking. Highlighting “A Tradition of Innovation" this year’s event will host a broad track of symposia, technical sessions, panels and keynotes covering timely topics such as energy efficient and vehicular communications as well as “Green Communication,” “Network of the Future” and the “LTE Revolution.”

The first day of IEEE ICC 2009 will begin on Sunday, June 14th with a full-day of tutorials and workshops offering presentations on areas like multiple access communications, medical and vehicular applications and networking, cooperative mobile networks, congestion control in heterogeneous networks, key enabling technologies, iterative receiver design and MIMO systems engineering.

Monday, June 15th will then mark the conference’s grand opening. During the morning ceremonies, keynote addresses will be offered by Hamid Akhavan, CEO of T-Mobile International AG and Thomas Jurk, Saxony State Minister for Economic Affairs and Labour.  Following these remarks will be the plenary panel titled “Innovations – Taking Advantage of Opportunities.”  In the afternoon, Hartmut Kremling, chief technology officer of Vodafone Germany and Arcor Ag, will then speak on “Convergence – Vision and Factors of Success.”

From Tuesday through Wednesday, these high-level events will continue with keynotes from Siegmund Redl, senior director business development of Qualcomm Europe, who will present the “Next Generation Mobile Communication Technologies for Consumer Devices – A Core Technology Provider Perspective;” Viviane Reding, Commissioner for Information Society and Media European Commission, who will talk about “Telecom and Media: How advanced is convergence?” and Botaro Hirosaki, senior executive vice president of NEC Corporation, who will remark on  “A New Role of ICT – Paradigm Shift of C&C Technologies.” Other noteworthy educational sessions planned for these days include panels dedicated to “Automotive Communications: Car-to-Car and Car-to-Environment,” “Broadband Access through Wireless,” “3G to 4G: Towards Full Mobility IP Services” and “The Future Internet.”

Furthermore, ICC will host the presentation of nearly 300 oral and poster sessions highlighting a wide range of subjects under the areas of communications theory, signal processing, wireless and optical communications and networking, communications software and services, information systems security and ad-hoc sensor networking. Targeted areas will cover cognitive networks, data storage, situation and mobility management, performance analysis, resource allocation, precoding, wireless channels, satellite systems, network survivability, traffic engineering, peer-to-peer services and more.

The conference will then conclude on Thursday, June 18th with the presentation of another full day of workshops and tutorials. This includes four tutorials dedicated to channel coding, network economics, wireless Internet and implementation issues as well as five workshops presented on green communications, LTE evolution organizers, public safety communications, the network of the future and synergies in communications and localization.
