Glasgow's Subway to be equipped with Britain's Safety Radio Communications System
Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) has awarded Airwave the contract to install the Airwave network throughout the Glasgow Subway.
Airwave will replace the existing analogue radio system with its secure digital radio technology that is used by the emergency services and other public safety organisations throughout mainland Britain.
The Airwave system will provide radio communications in all trains, tunnels and stations and will enable SPT personnel to benefit from highly resilient coverage with one another and the Subway Control Room. In addition, it will also provide SPT personnel with the ability to communicate with the emergency services and other public safety organisations. The £4 million contract will run over a seven-year period with Airwave designing, installing and managing the network.
Gordon Maclennan, Assistant Chief Executive of SPT, said: “Airwave’s TETRA digital system is considered one of the best in the industry. It is currently used by the Police, including British Transport Police, and is being adopted by other emergency services making it an essential contribution to SPT’s emergency planning and improving the safety of our Subway passengers.”
John Lewis, general manager for Fire and Civil Resilience at Airwave, said: “Secure and reliable communications for an underground transport system are vital both for the smooth operation of the subway service and for effective response in an emergency situation. SPT’s decision to adopt the same technology as the emergency services and other public safety bodies means it will benefit from superior communications and have the ability to interoperate with other Airwave users when necessary.”
