The UK Ministry of Defence has announced that it is to undertake a comprehensive research study into driver behaviour across a sample of its organisations. The MOD will use GreenRoad Technologies’ Safety Center in 200 vehicles across the UK to monitor and evaluate driving behaviour for six months.

The Safety Center will be installed in a broad selection of common use vehicles in the Royal Navy, British Army and the RAF. Major Shepherd, MOD Road Safety Officer said, “As part of our commitment to duty of care, we have an obligation for the safety of all MOD personnel – whether they are drivers or passengers. We have partnered with GreenRoad because they have innovative technology that can potentially modify driver behaviour, where required.”

The GreenRoad Safety Center works by rating driving skills without invading the driver’s privacy or tracking their location. An in-vehicle sensor collects information on about 120 different driving maneuvers. These are then analysed to give the driver feedback about their driving and the areas that need improvement.

For the first three months of the study, Safety Center will collect ‘blind’ test information on approximately 2,000 MOD drivers. These figures will be used to analyse current driving behaviour and compare them across different parts of the organisation. Then for the final three months, GreenRoad will set up accounts for Transport Managers allowing them to provide regular feedback to drivers in their unit. Individual drivers will also see their driving ability on the red, yellow and green LEDs in the vehicle.

Aidan Rowsome, vice president of GreenRoad EMEA said, “The MOD understands the challenges of modifying driver behaviour to reduce accident rates. They are one of the pioneering organisations who are taking the steps to use technology to its full capabilities.”
