Dear Colleague

Grayrigg Train Crash Presentation and Regional AGM

At 1700 hours on Tuesday 11 March 2008 we will be having our Regional AGM at the Lancashire Police Headquarters, Hutton, Preston and I attach the formal calling notice for your attention.

As part of this meeting we have arranged for Brian Mitchelhill, the new NW FiRe Control Regional Project Manager to give a presentation on the Grayrigg Train Crash. Some of you may remember Brian was very much the public face of the Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service at the incident spending about 6 hours of giving media interviews.

Brian will cover the various issues faced in dealing with the incident which occurred in a relatively remote rural area with narrow access roads. The incident is still sub-judice as far as the investigation is concerned so the presentation will concentrate on the rescue aspects and how communications were achieved etc. Although from a public perspective the loss of life and injuries could potentially have been much more serious the challenges faced by the Emergency Services and other Civil Contingency Act responders were great. Our objective in asking Brian to speak to us about this incident which occurred in our Region is to enable you as members of BAPCO to benefit from others experience. Brian will discuss the lessons to be learnt as well as the success they had in dealing with this incident. He will also look at the incident from a Regional view point looking at what might happen in the future when the Regional Fire Control is introduced.

We do hope you will be able to attend and would ask that you let Tracey Mott, BAPCO’s Administration Manager @ admin.manager@bapco.org.uk know your intentions by close of play on Friday 7 March so we can make the necessary arrangements regarding the provision of refreshments.

Jim Irving
Regional Secretary
