Home Office to pull 101 crime line
A petty crime hotline that has been piloted in five areas across England and Wales has had its funding rescinded across all five partnerships by the Home Office.
The 101 service, a hotline for people to use to report low-level crime, has received praise for its benefits to communities in Cardiff, Hampshire, Northumbria, Sheffield and Leicester.
However the Home Office says it wants to divert funds towards public protection and national security and the finding for the pilots will end in February next year.
A Home Office spokesperson said it cost £7.47m to manage the service, which covers about ten per cent of the population of England and Wales.
The South Yorkshire 101 Partnership is "very disappointed", according to a spokesperson for the organisation. A further press report stated that the spokesperson also said, "We are currently assessing the options available to us and will make a decision on what will happen with 101 in Sheffield over the next few weeks."
