Nottinghamshire Police trial hand-held device

Nottingham Police are trialling a new scheme where 40 Blackberrys are to be used by officers on the beat.

From January 2008, officers will use the digital hand-held devices in Broxtowe so they can record an extra level of detail while on patrol, reports the BBC.

Martin Hanson, spokesperson for Nottingham Police, said officers will be able to use the devices to check the police database while away from the station.

He added: "What takes the time and effort in design is getting our very sophisticated

systems to be available and useful to an officer in a busy situation on a very small screen.

"The way we have done this and the design used is something we are keeping under wraps at the moment."

Officers will have security measures on the Blackberrys to ensure no unauthorised people access information on them.
